new, favorites. Not every situation comedy is a success. In fact, many fizzle out long before they even make it in the Fall line up. They are test marketed and
anything that does not get satisfactory ratings is dumped. One criticism of situation comedies has been of its use of canned laughter. Several investigations of spontaneous, emotional response to
humor have revealed that participants who are presented with material that is accompanied by laughter do indeed laugh more than those who receive the same material without laughter (Martin 22).
This leads one to believe that perhaps the situation isnt that funny and the laughter included in the show provokes the audience to respond. But it does seem that the
situation comedy is here to stay, laughter and all. It is not easy for writers to come up with classics. Shows such as The Dick Van Dyke Show and Bewitched
seem to almost transcend the boundaries of time. People are willing to watch these old gems in black and white in favor of some of the more modern shows. What
makes one show endure while another quickly fades into obscurity? There are no secrets really. Some of it is chance or due to excellent casting. Sometimes it is one actor
who makes the show but generally it is a blend of actors and a chemistry that permeates the show and makes it endure. Critics believe that a shows endurance can
depend on the material itself. If the shows address political subject matter, for instance, they will not be appealing twenty years later. The audience may not get the jokes in
another time period. This point does seem to be true. I Love Lucy has remained popular because it is based on situations that anybody can relate to. This premise
