It was painted by the infamous Michelangelo and while it likely has undergone changes due to environment through the centuries, it still stands as one of the most awe inspiring
pieces of art in the world. The following paper examines and analyzes the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Sistine Chapel Ceiling
"The Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512...is that of the large Sistine Chapel built within the Vatican by Pope Sixtus IV, begun in 1477 and finished
by 1480" (Wikipedia, 2007). Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo do the painting which was apparently intended to complete, as well as compliment, paintings around the ceiling which depicted various images
of the lives of Jesus and Moses (Wikipedia, 2007). However, Michelangelo, who considered himself a sculptor and not a painter, wanted to finish other work, not paint (Wikipedia, 2007). But,
the pope was insistent and Michelangelo really had little choice but to do as he was asked (Wikipedia, 2007). In the beginning
he had planned to do the apostles, all twelve figures but then he altered his vision and in the end he had painted three hundred figures and the process took
him four years (Wikipedia, 2007). "Contrary to popular belief, he painted in a standing position, not lying on his back. According to Vasari, The work was carried out in extremely
uncomfortable conditions, from his having to work with his head tilted upward" (Wikipedia, 2007). In relationship to the style of painting that Michelangelo used it is noted that he
