a mans world. They are perhaps seen as simpletons who have no true power or true intelligence. Occasionally, however, we have authors or playwrights who offer up women who seem to struggle against all odds and come out on top, often even higher than the men in the stories. With this in mind the following paper examines how Theodore Dreisers treats his heroine "Sister Carrie" and how Henry James treats his heroine Isabel from "Portrait of a Lady." The paper finishes with a comparison and contrast of the two. Carrie Carrie is a woman who truly struggles, right from the beginning, to find a place for herself in society. She is not content to merely be a wife or a mother, but wants some level of success and strives to achieve that. In the beginning she finds herself moving up in the world through her involvement with men. First she takes up with Drouet and then sees him as less than the next man who comes along, Hurstwood. She truly immerses herself in her relationship with Hurstwood but eventually realizes that in order to truly do more than survive, she must achieve her own dreams and works on getting into show business. She finds herself incredibly taken with show business, and also very well liked in this particular field. As such she does better than make a living yet does not tell Hurstwood because she feels it would hurt his pride. Eventually she leaves him and he becomes incredibly destitute. Her success is clearly something that illustrates the power of this particular woman in struggling against all odds to find herself and to find her place in society while the men around her fall away.
