Phillip Sidney was a courtier just prior to Shakespeare who was one of
the first to popularize the sonnet. He was an instigator in form and a

to Shakespeare who was one of the first to popularize the sonnet. He was an instigator in form and a master of metaphor. The sonnets contain a great
range of literary and poetic nuance. His most famous sonnets are to be found within a sonnet cycle referred to as Astrophil and Stella. "Sidney who was
an avid experimenter in poetic forms, the 108 sonnets are interrupted by 11 songs of varying forms, usually using shorter lines than the sonnets pentameters (mostly tetrameters [four feet per
line]). ... This work, and the songs it contains, are one of the great expressions of the "pastoral" mode in English. The sonnet cycle, as a form, became a
commonplace achievement of young poets after Sidney and was one of the first published works of one William Shakespeare before any of his plays were published" (Anonymous sidney_.htm).
The entire sonnet cycle is a love poem that utilizes the imagery, symbols and metaphors of the ancient religions. The theme in sonnet 31 is a correspondence between the
moons course through the sky and the act of falling in love. The tone includes a bit of sarcasm or perhaps cynicism in the love the young man seeks
as being negative because it has not come quickly or freely. The tone, then, is mostly lovelorn with a hint of petulance. One view of ancient cosmology includes
