when Newton was born consisted a strange mix of fact and fiction, of isolated laws that were insufficient to describe the natural well or predict its behavior. However, by the
time he died, he transformed science, particularly in regards to physics and mathematics, into a system of laws that could be successfully applied to a wide range of natural phenomena.
In regards to mathematics, Newton formulated the basis for the development of both differential and integral calculus prior to the independent discovery of these mathematical principles by Gottfried Leibniz
(Hall, 1998). Using mathematics, Newton also formulated the laws of motion and gravitation. These math formulas explain the way in which objects move. For example, Newtons Third Law of Motion
states, that "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." To understand this principle, consider what happens when a person steps from a boat to the bank of
a lake. As they move in the direction onto the bank, the boat moves in the opposite direction due to this movement. Tradition has it that in 1666, Newton
saw an apple fall in his garden and he later recalled that during the same year, he began to "think of gravity extending to the orb of the Moon" (Hatch,
2002). Despite the appeal of the traditional story, historical evidence shows that Newtons theory of universal gravitation did not simply come to him full-blown, but rather evolved over a 20
year period (Hatch, 2002). Nevertheless, it remains true that Newtons formulas changed the way in which the universe was understood, as, until Newton, the fact that the planets remains in
fixed orbits was understood, but not explained. Newtons calculations provided that the planets are held in place by gravity and why their orbits are elongated, rather than circular (Hall, 1998).
