They begin the stories as young men who are filled with innocent notions of honor and integrity in that they do not truly understand the nature of the danger inherent in what they embark upon. They both begin their stories as innocent men with noble ideas, and end up as wise men with the same ideals. In the following paper we briefly examine the two stories and the development of the knights, Sir Gawain in "The Green Knight" and the Redcrosee Knight in "The Faerie Queene." The paper finishes with a brief comparison of the two. Sir Gawain The story begins with Christmas Eve, when numerous knights and ladies are gathered in King Arthurs banquet hall enjoying the holiday celebration. A stranger enters the hall, clad in green armor, and possessing a green face and beard. It is the Green Knight and he issues a challenge to any who would take it. The challenge is that which involves a dual or battle. He states that if anyone can defeat him, here and now, they must meet him at another specified time to receive a similar defeat. The people are frightened. However, one young knight, Sir Gawain, is not frightened by this obvious beast and takes the challenge, severing the Green Knights head, who merely picks up his head, and informs Gawain that he must receive a similar blow at a later time and then leaves the hall. Along his journey he is faced with many temptations that would keep him from his promised duty. He encounters dragons, vicious animals, and savage men as he journeys in search of the Green Knight.
