According to Rowan, "For pagans, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one of our most important initiatory and transformational stories, and one of the richest in terms of both imagery and symbolism" (gawain.htm). He is a brave knight, and also proves to be a relatively chivalrous one taking on a challenge that will not only defend his king and his queen, but taking on a challenge that no one else seems interested in. The story begins with a gathering in the court of King Arthur where the Green Knight comes and makes a challenge that only Sir Gawain takes. Because of his success in the challenge he agrees to meet with the Green Knight at a later date. But, we must remember that Sit Gawain is young and relatively inexperienced. In fact, "The people in the hall are surprised that King Arthur allows Gawain to go on this journey to the Green Knights chapel" due to the fact that he is young and inexperienced (Anonymous Sir Gawain and the Green Knight gawain.html). . In the following paper we examine Sir Gawains journey from the court to the Green Castle, illustrating how the travels are obviously a metaphor for the journey from childhood to adulthood, a journey that Sir Gawain embarks on. The Journey As Sir Gawain is about to set off we note that he is blessed with a somewhat sacred sword as it contains some biblical significance.
