reader a look at Christianity as well as pagan beliefs. In short, it is an entertaining and educational work. The following paper compares and contrasts the characters of Sir Gawain
and the Green Knight, illustrating how the Green Knight is the wiser of the two and how he serves as a teacher for Sir Gawain rather than simply a frightening
or evil and pagan creature. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight In the beginning of the story there is a grand gathering in King Arthurs hall and all
his knights are present. It is a feast and then arrives a mysterious man dressed in green, riding on a grand steed that is also covered in glory. The people
at the feast are, at the very least, dumbstruck and perhaps a bit frightened. "All looked on him as he stood, and drew near unto him wondering greatly what he
might be; for many marvels had they seen, but none such as this, and phantasm and fa?rie did the folk deem it" (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight). The
Green Knight is without fear, and without any weakness it would seem. He has simply come to dare any man to show that they are really knights, to test whether
King Arthur and his men are really what they claim to be. It is a dare and at one point King Arthur acts as though he will do battle, to
which possibility the Green Knight simply sits, still, and unaffected. In this presentation of the Green Knight the reader knows he is a man without fear, a man of mystery,
