which Sir Gawain is challenged to maintain his virtue while faced with numerous worldly temptations. Interestingly enough, the poem offers a pagan figure (the Green Knight) to test Sir Gawains
virtue. Many have argued that the importance of this figure is powerfully defined by the medieval notion of pagan decadence and the temptations of the material world or the fleshly
world. On the other hand, the central components of Christian virtue are considered to be those which are more truthful and which obviously set forth the code within this poem
as they involve Christian values of fidelity, truth and honor. In this simple examination of the poem we illustrate how Gawain is seriously tested and threatened in terms of his
chivalrous attitudes and beliefs. The paper also illustrates how Gawain comes out victorious, maintaining his virtue and chivalrous beliefs. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight The story begins with
Christmas Eve, when numerous knights and ladies are gathered in King Arthurs banquet hall enjoying the holiday celebration. A stranger enters the hall, clad in green armor, and possessing a
green face and beard. It is the Green Knight and he issues a challenge to any who would take it. The challenge is that which involves a dual or battle.
He states that if anyone can defeat him, here and now, they must meet him at another specified time to receive a similar defeat. The people are frightened. However, one
young knight, Sir Gawain, is not frightened by this obvious beast and takes the challenge, severing the Green Knights head. But, as we must remember, the Green Knight serves to
represent all that is base and paganistic. As such he is a creature that is incredibly difficult to defeat. He picks up his head, informs Gawain that he must receive
