that is not the only reason single parents are becoming more common. An unplanned pregnancy can place one squarely in the middle of the single parents role. So too
can the death of a spouse. Indeed, one might even choose to be a single parent. Bu chance or by choice, the problems that will confront a single
parent can be overwhelming. In the US some 4.1 divorces occur per 1000 inhabitants (Crouch and Arnold, 2009). While that is just one reason an individual can become a
single parent, it is a prominent one. While the reasons one can become a single parent are many, the result is basically the same when children are involved.
One parent becomes the primary care giver for those children. Single parents, however, face many challenges. The only way they can optimize the health and welfare of their
children is to rise to those challenges. To do so they must not only work twice as hard but also be prepared to use what resources are available to
them. Single parents must not only work to make up for the efforts of the missing spouse, they often must work to make up for the dissolution of the
nuclear family as a whole. Much has changed in our society over time. In traditional societies marriage is regarded as a holy union between a man and a
woman. The concept of family brings to mind the classic three-pronged structure of mother, father, and children. The concept also traditionally encompasses extended family members such as grandparents,
aunts, uncles and cousins. In modern society, however, marriage is often viewed as a temporary arrangement and one that will evolve as society dictates (Hansen, 2005). The concept
