success come easier for some than it does others. When an Ivy League school such as Harvard or Yale are involved the stakes are particularly high. Contrary to
popular perception, not all students enter Ivy League schools with a silver spoon in their mouths! Some students at these institutions are, in fact, severely disadvantaged in more than
one realm of their lives. Single black mothers are among the most disadvantaged of all. While obtaining a degree, particularly an Ivy League degree can help reverse this
disadvantage, it is not entirely a cure for it. These women must deal with the facts of their gender and their race all of their lives. This makes
for some rather interesting facts of life in the workplace. The reasons that single black mothers struggle at these schools are only speculative
but it has been suggested by some that they relate to three specific problems. These are: a lack of money, low test scores, and (the most controversial reason of
all) a general lack of direction from home while these students were growing up. Several other facts, of course, are relevant in this equation. Black women have not
only been historically suppressed by Western Civilization but throughout history in general, they continue to be suppressed today. The matrix of suppression which has been in place for centuries
is complex to say the least. While, admittedly, there is an observable difference in gender roles between the male and female
in the more ancient components of our society, these differences were justifiable in terms of the differences in physical makeup between women and men and the requirements of their environment.
