makes the viewer feel good, and gives the viewer a sense of romance and the ability to almost fly through the dancing scenes which, by the way, have some of the best dancers movie audiences have ever seen on the screen. While watching powerful dancers is entertaining in itself, it also takes a very good team of camera workers, and a good director, to really bring a film consisting of dancing to the status of a classic. The following paper examines some of the techniques used in this film as it involves the camera, and then discusses a specific scene, the classic scene, where Gene Kelly dances in the rain. Singin in the Rain This particular film utilizes a great deal of close-ups in combination with long shots. Interesting, but not surprisingly, enough the scenes which are close-ups tend to be scenes where the audience is being pulled into the characters themselves. With the close-ups we are brought into the faces of those who are talking, thinking, and generally presenting their characters. The long shots are those that involve many characters sometimes, but also the shots that involve the dancing and the scenes around them. Through giving us long shots of such dancing scenes we are made a part of the scene while also seeing the entire dance routine. In many films of dancing the direction may not be on the long shot but on aspects or portions of the dancer and their body or bodies. We are not always given the long view where we can see the entire dance.
