Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 4 page research paper/essay that analyzes the position taken by Fred Singer and Dennis Avery, in their best-selling book Unstoppable, every 1500 years, Global Warming that global warming is part of a natural cycle and human carbon dioxide emissions play only a minor role. The writer examines the reaction of the scientific community to this thesis, which rejects it. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

as 500 years, but is evident in Earths history for over the last million years. This approach to explaining global warming is based on the research of Willi Dansgaard and
Hans Oeschger, whose analysis of oxygen isotopes revealed a 1500 year climatic cycle, "plus or minus 500 years" (Singer and Avery 1). Their position dictates that human produced carbon dioxides
role in global warming is minimal. They also maintain that temperature change in this natural cycle is moderate, but that the cycle is unstoppable (Singer and Avery 2). It
should be noted that Singer and Avery do not deny that global warming is occurring and readily admit that there is scientific consensus on this point. Rather, they dispute the
idea that the majority of scientists now support the idea that global warming is caused by the emission of greenhouse gases (Schaffler 14). Their book has an abundance of footnotes
citing climate studies that argue against taking an alarmist view of climate change (Schaffler 14). As part of their substantiation, Singer and Avery maintain that the "National Academy of
Science (1975) experts exhibited hysterical fears about a finite possibility that a serious worldwide cooling could befall the Earth" (Peterson, Connolley and Fleck 1325). However, in their article, Peterson, Connolley
and Fleck show argue persuasively that this idea is a myth and never was consensus among scientists that humanity was facing an impending ice age. Rather, they show that, even
then, the threat of "anthropogenic warming dominated the peer-reviewed literature" (Peterson, Connolley and Fleck 1325). However, in order to access the validity of Singer and Averys position, it is necessary
to look not only at their book, but also at how their argument has been evaluated by the scientific community. Dr. Joseph Romm, on his professional meteorological web site,
