driver of the Singapore economy and indications are that the STBs strategies to achieve this goal are succeeding admirably. One of their key strategies is the establishment of thematic zones
throughout the city that are designed to attract both tourists and local citizens. Savage, Huang and Chang (2004) argue that the establishment of thematic zones is a useful strategy
that will contribute greatly to making Singapore the worlds leading tourist destination. They focus their study specifically on the Singapore River thematic zone, which is one of eleven such zones
identified by the Singapore Tourist Board. While Singapore cannot compete with other nations in terms of such attractions as beautiful beaches or huge theme parks, it can offer an authentic
slice of Asian urban life, which is what the STB has in mind in establishing thematic zones. This strategy capitalizes on the reputation of Singapore as representative of the "New
Asia," that is "a nation that is progressive and sophisticated, yet still a unique expression of the Asian soul" (Savage, Huang and Chang, 2004, p. 212). In this manner, Singapores
theme zones combine historical landscapes, representing the Asia of the past, with commercial innovations that represent the Asia of today. Thematic zones are rather like open-air theme parks, as
