all, it aids understanding of the issues involved with this question if the precise meaning of both the Sinai Covenant and the term "Pentateuch" are addressed. While "Torah" is the
traditional Judaic name for the first five books of the Old Testament, i.e., Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, modern scholarship also refers to this body of ancient writings as
the "Pentateuch," which is a term that is derived from the Greek and means "five scrolls" (Bandstra 24). Typically, "Pentateuch" is the term favored by biblical scholars, while "Torah" is
the term most often found within religious writing (Bandstra 24). The "Sinai Covenant" refers to the "pact between God and Israel" that is described in the Pentateuch and occurred
when Moses received the Ten Commandments, as well as the rest of Judaic law, from God while atop Mt. Sinai. Joseph Berman, of Bar-Ilan University, points out how scholarship
over the last half century as illustrated the multiple elements that the Sinai Covenant shares with ancient Near East suzerainty treaties. A "suzerainty treaty" as a "treaty between political unequals,
