The word is used so much that "it carries little emotional and intellectual force" (Ritenbaugh 1996) today. In fact, in todays world, many people recognize only the most egregious and
obvious sins (Ritenbaugh). The reason for that is that we live by sight, not faith" (Ritenbaugh 1996). Further, the consequences, the effects of sin are very often not discernible to
people (Ritenbaugh). Yet, sin affects the sinner and everyone else (Ritenbaugh). Sin can and does have profound and serious effects on us whether we commit the sin or another person
sins (Ritenbaugh). And, because we are human, we sin often. St. Paul said: "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). He added: "Therefore,
just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). The one man
was Adam, "in Adam all sinned" (Torres 2006). The word death refers to both physical and spiritual death. Sin is universal, it traps man and holds people under its own
authority: "sin reigned in death" (Romans 5:21). Paul expands on this thought: "Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves
to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be
your master, because you are not under law, but under grace" (Romans 6:13-14). Sin uses parts of our bodies to dominate us and through this, we can recognize it. Paul
