Only a few years ago a search for recent articles on management theory would return topics along the lines of situational leadership, contingency theory and leader-member exchange.
In todays newest publications those have given way to complexity theory and the theory of constraints, though transformational and participative leadership remain. Most of the weekly articles for
the course fall outside of the date requirements for this paper. Other management theories would be more attractive for application to CrysTels situation in the simulation, but the date
requirement for sources eliminates models such as Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchards Situational Leadership model, a variation of contingency theory that does "not prescribe a single leadership style, but identifies
the three essential elements of task behavior, relationship behavior and ... level of maturity" (Monoky, 1998; p. 142) to result in four possible styles of communication and accomplishing tasks. Two
Theories Only two specific, distinct theories of management and leadership were discovered in a search of literature published after 2001. The dearth
of recent articles on contingency theory, participative management, transformational leadership, leader-member exchange, path-goal theory, Lewins change model and similar topics cannot be a result of determination that the theories are
no longer relevant. Rather, it is more likely that the literature reflects the need to relate "new" information and these standard theories have been examined from every direction in
the past. Complexity theory and the theory of constraints are left to be discussed in the literature published after 2001. Complexity Theory
Though complexity theory would not have been a first choice without the publication date requirement, it emerges as a quite likely candidate for providing a workable change framework. Smith
