This paper compares and contrasts the two films and describes how the deal with the nature of identity and friendship. Discussion The thing that ties the two films together most strongly is the fact that theyre both "buddy" movies. Smoke Signals, which is a film about Native Americans directed by Native American Chris Eyre, tells the story of Victor Joseph and Thomas Builds-the-Fire, two young Indians who go to retrieve the ashes of Victors father (Berardinelli, 1998). Victor is what whites would consider a "typical" Indian-angry and cynical, while Thomas is gentler, a storyteller (Berardinelli, 1998). They can be seen as representing the two sides of Native American culture: the ancient culture of legends and myths, and the modern one, angry about the treatment it has endured, and the continuing problems of alcoholism, unemployment and poor health that plague it. Its also a road picture, as the two young men travel from the reservation to Phoenix to retrieve Arnold Josephs ashes (Berardinelli, 1998). Thomas has paid for the trip, and on the way, the two have a chance to get to know one another (Arnold Joseph saved Thomass life) and to explore the meaning their culture has for each of them (Berardinelli, 1998). Its also notable, Berardinelli says, that Chris Eyre doesnt seem to have a political agenda or use his film to trumpet the cause of Indian injustice to a white audience. He refrains from proselytizing, and instead tells a simple story of these two young men.
