This is a 5 page paper discussing some of the general similarities and differences found in the James Patterson novels “Along Came a Spider” and “Kiss the Girls”. The first two novels in the series featuring detective and psychologist Alex Cross have similar characters such as Cross’ partner and his children. Introductory chapters tell the readers of historical crimes the killers have committed. Both novels feature serial killers who are white males in their 20s and 30s who have adopted new personas to commit their crimes. Patterson also used similar writing styles for emphasis and managed to portray the perspective of the crimes from that of Cross, the killers and their victims. “Kiss the Girls” however involves a much more intense plot with two collaborating and competing killers, involves the abduction of Cross’ niece and has many more gruesome details and murders.

The novels are the first in a series of seven novels featuring the central detective and psychologist Alex Cross. Accompanying Cross on his cases is his partner John Sampson and
there are many details provided about his two children. In the first novel "Along Came a Spider" the character of Alex Cross is well described as a man who enjoys
playing Gershwin tunes on his piano wears Harris Tweed jackets. Many of the aspects of Cross are reiterated in "Kiss the Girls" although Cross has switched to the blues and
the novel is considerably more sombre in its onset. The first novel involves one killer who has named himself Son of Lindbergh and Patterson does a detailed introduction of his
first of many crimes as a child by kidnapping and killing the Lindbergh baby. The second novel involves two men each with detailed descriptions of the start of their crimes
at a young age. All the killers in both novels can be described as white males in their twenties and thirties. The second novel however, because there appear to be
two competing central killers is much more gruesome in its detail and involves many more murders. In addition, Cross niece is also taken adding a much more personal element for
Cross. In both novels Patterson used similar techniques of details, settings and emphasis to adequately involve the readers in the matters of the crimes.
