end of the old, and the beginning of the new. It is symbolic, but there is in some way a paradox as these opposite symbols are in many respects very
much alike. Many writers and poets have compared and contrasted infants with the elderly. Interestingly, there are so many similarities in that they both usually require assistance from an able-bodied
adults, have few teeth and require soft foods, sleep a great deal and are to some extent visually impaired. They both often have little hair, but that is not necessarily
the case. Of course, the comparison does not always hold true and many of the named similarities are somewhat stereotypical. While infants come into the world very similar to one
another, an elderly man or woman will be very different form another individual in the same age category. Some older individuals are quite cognizant of what is going on and
also may be physically active. Hence, there are similarities and differences between the two groups. One difference is that the infant is just born, and had lived in the womb
whereas the elderly individual has lived a life already and in that respect, they are at opposite ends of the life cycle. Yet, birth and death are part of life
and in some way they are each nearer to the darkness--the before and after life--that people fear. Also, each of these events are associated with a variety of rituals. There
are cultural and social meanings attached to things like birth and death (Richardson 183). Birth is associated with baptism (183). In the Jewish religion, there are many other ceremonies
