autobiography: Franz Kafka was very close to the character of Gregor Samsa. This paper explores the similarities. Discussion We might expect that the author would have nothing in common with
a character who awoke one morning to find that he had been turned into a giant cockroach. The absurdity of the situation would seem to make such a relationship impossible.
However, Kafka and his creation share so many of the same features that it cannot be a coincidence. Kafkas writing is deceptively simple and leaves us with nothing to do
but focus on Gregor and his family as they try to deal with his transformation. "Kafka focuses the readers attention on a single character that symbolizes himself and his life,
not Everyman as some authors do," a method that he uses in most of his works (Batson, 2007). Perhaps the greatest point of identification between the two is that both
work as salesmen (Batson, 2007). Kafka worked for a "semi-governmental insurance company" for whom he traveled often; Samsa is a traveling salesman, though we dont know what he sells (Batson,
2007). Samsa is working to pay off his fathers debt, but Kafkas father disapproved of his job but other than the fathers opinion of the work, the two have the
same occupation (Batson, 2007). Samsas immediately family is modeled on Kafkas (Batson, 2007). Samsa is the eldest child; in the story, the father is at first a nonentity who gradually
becomes dominant, the mother is completely supportive of the father, and the sister, Grete is an innocent who matures during the course of the story (Batson, 2007). Kafka was the
