The title of the book tells a reader a great deal about the story, because it really is the tale of Tayo, and the ceremony he undergoes to find a
cure to the depression and despair he feels. The book is set shortly after the end of WWII, and Tayo and others have returned to the reservation after serving in
the Army (Silko). They were in the Philippines fighting the Japanese, and the horrors of war have followed them home; Tayo for instance has horrible dreams and is often sick
(Silko). In addition, the reservation is suffering a drought, and he is afraid that when he cursed the rain in the Philippines, he accidentally brought the calamity down on his
people (Silko). Therefore, his quest is two-fold; to find some comfort and to bring rain. His friends, Emo and Harley among them, do what so many Indians did-and still do-to
dull intolerable pain; they drink. But Tayo is brighter and more determined than they are, and he knows that alcohol is only a temporary respite for his agony (Silko). If
he wants to truly move forward with his life, he needs a permanent "cure"-the "ceremony" of the title. He is having trouble finding it, because he cannot really define who
and what he is. Like many Native Americans, his world has clashed headlong into the world of the white man, and he doesnt know what to believe (Silko). Even more
to the point, Tayo is half-white, so his conflict runs very deep (Silko). He is literally caught between two worlds: hes despised by whites who seem him only as a
