This paper gives an excellent view of the impact and viewpoints this can have on young people in their growth and development. SILENT DANCING This book by Judith Ortiz Cofer gives an inside view of how ethnically different youngsters grow up in their own homes, learning all about their culture through narrative storytelling as much as by actual behavior. This is an autobiography that is a compelling tale of the author growing up listening to her mother, her aunts and her grandmother telling stories of Puerto Rican women. These storytelling afternoons served a twofold purpose; they were a way to pass the time for the adults, and at the same time it was teaching the younger girls what it was like to be a Puerto Rican woman. "they told cuentos, the morality and cautionary tales told by the women in our family for generations: stories that became a part of my subconscious as I grew up in two worlds, the tropical island and the cold city, and which would later surface in my dreams and in my poetry" (Cofer 1990, 15).
