plot. It is a story that is a psychological thriller, as well as a frightening book about the vulnerability of people. The two main characters in the book are Hannibal
and Clarice. The following paper examines the characters in the novel and the theme. The paper first presents an excerpt from the book that helps us understand both the characters
and the theme. Quote While there are many excerpts from Harris book that people may find intriguing or incredibly important, for
this writer it is the excerpt wherein Hannibal is making something of a supposed deal with Clarice. He wants to know something about her first, however, and she must become
incredibly vulnerable to his intense mind. He asks her, "What woke you up? Did you dream?" and she replies "I woke up and heard the lambs screaming. I woke up
in the dark and the lambs were screaming" (Harris 229). The rest of the excerpt follows: "They were slaughtering the spring lambs? Yes. What did you do?...You still wake up
sometimes, dont you? Wake up in the iron dark with the lambs screaming...do you think if you caught buffalo Bill yourself and if you made Catherine all right, you could
make the lambs stop screaming, do you think theyd be all right too and you wouldnt wake up again in the dark and hear the lambs screaming? Clarice?" (229-230).
