killer dubbed "Buffalo Bill" and there is much mystery about this notorious killer on the loose. And then there is Hannibal Lecter who once killed and ate his victims but
is in captivity, at least as the novel begins. These men do not know each other or work together. They are bonded-at least figuratively-by FBI agent Clarice Starling. A new
agent, and still in training, this counselor who has a background in psychology profiles serial killers. Clarice works for Jack Crawford, who specializes in the profiling of serial killers. While
they go about their business, Buffalo Bill becomes a problem. The case is difficult to solve. He skins his female victims alive. Currently, and what makes the book so suspenseful,
is that the killer has kidnapped the daughter of a politician. Now, not only is the serial killer case a high profile one indeed, but the fact that he has
abducted the daughter of someone well known makes for a more serious ride. Clarice had interviewed serial killers before, but this new focus by Crawford gains the attention of the
reader. Indeed, Clarice will be doing more than merely creating profiles of serial killers. She may even save lives in the process. The job turns into one where Clarice is
no longer just interviewing serial killers such as Lecter, but she is told to use Lecter to gain information about serial killing. After all, what does he have to lose?
Clarice is a novice but she has a background in psychology. The gist of this story is whether or not Clarice can break through Hannibals wall and get solid information
to help them find the present killer who is on the loose. What ensues is a cat and mouse game. Lecter himself was a psychiatrist. Therefore, it is obvious before
