people who have developed this area. Given this wide range of diverse influences, what makes the West distinct can best be described as a perspective rather than a specific
circumstance, location or reality. Defining this perspective is certainly a task in ambiguity however, as the meaning of the West differs from one person to another. However, there
are indeed common elements that can be extracted from the majority experience that will serve to typify the perspective that is unique to this region.
The West has always been important in American history, from the time of the Spanish colonization all the way through today in our modern society. The
history of the West is far more colorful than merely one era after another of controversies between cowboys and Indians. In fact, there is a history of great diversity
in the West and a great many reasons why people have settled there. Consider the great Mormon migration and the numbers of people who continue to flock to the
West as tourists (think Las Vegas). The West offers many different things to different people, and in this way it has come to be recognized as a region of
rich contrasts. According to Stegner, the West is America. This is very profound geographically and culturally, because he is arguing
that the West is a microcosm of America. The culture, the ideas, the business, the tourism, the education opportunities, the political debates, etc. - all of these are what
makes up America but also what makes up the West specifically. This is evidence then of very different cultures and ideas blending together in one region. And so,
