the reader with images of strangers. They are very different in their presentation of the stranger and what the stranger symbolizes or offers to a particular character. The following paper
examines the significance of the stranger in both short stories. Significance of Strangers: Carver and Oates In Carvers story there is
a man and woman and they are married. She has an old friend who is coming to visit them and her husband does not know him. He is essentially feeling
"put out" with the impending visit from the stranger: "I wasnt enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me. My idea of
blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed. Sometimes they were led by seeing-eye dogs. A blind man in my house was not
something I looked forward to" (Carver). In this the reader sees how much the impending visit is disturbing the man and how
he wishes he did not have to meet the stranger. Interestingly enough, however, from a symbolic perspective, "The narrator can see, but really hes quite blind" (Torres). This understanding clearly
offers insight into the significance of the stranger for his role is to teach the narrator, to make him see in a very new and powerful way.
In relationship to Oates story, "The highly acclaimed short story Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? draws its inspiration from the case of
