[2], 2007). This style "permitted him to give color a predominant role" (Artchive [2], 2007). In relationship to Derain he was a man whose style changed through the years and
in 1905, when this painting, Fishing Boats (oil on canvas), was created, he was in the beginning of his career as an artist and was deeply associated with his friend
Matisse in relationship to the style that would be called Fauvism (Artchive [1], 2007). He would diverge from this style, the style seen in this painting, following WWI and the

These two paintings are both paintings whose subject matter depicts boats with Signacs presenting boats in the water at a distance, with obvious landscaping, and Derains boats all
but piled together with human figures within the painting. In Signacs there is the quiet and distant observation of what looks to almost be a sailboat race as many boats
are seen in the distance, with landscape in the front and on the side. It is a very much a Neo Impressionistic painting as the brush work, the style, is
