remarkable contribution to the study of the human psyche cannot be denied but many of his conclusions have come to be considered of lesser importance than what was once thought.
Despite certain flaws pointed out by contemporary theorists, Sigmund Freuds larger psychoanalysis theories are still believed by many psychologists, in part because there has not been a different theory which
can rival Freuds concepts related to the inner realities of being human. Modern critics should realize that Freud was aware of his own rather tenuous position in the scientific community
as is evidenced in how he opened his first lecture in the Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis made to at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts, in September of 1909. He said that
he was experiencing "bewildering feelings" upon finding himself in the New World "... lecturing before an audience of expectant inquirers" (Internet source). Such a statement suggests that he was well
aware that his position and opinions were likely to come under careful scrutiny. What the student working on this project should keep
in mind is that, in order to understand, much less criticize, Freud it is essential to understand the basic premises that Freud put forth. It is not enough to simply
declare him a misogynist, charlatan, or genius. One must examine his theories in the context of the time and culture in which they were presented and then to consider them
within a 21st century context. In addition, it is important to address the ways in which Freuds theory of personality, how the mind is structured, and how an individuals "self"
