brought employment, a higher standard of life for many people, conveniences and the real potential for becoming immensely wealthy if one had drive and creativity. The early 20th century brought
the war that was to end all wars but a mere twenty years later, another world war began. The same generation who had fought in the first world war also
fought in the second one along with their sons. Many authors captured the differences of these two centuries, particularly the latter part of the 19th century as compared to
the early and mid-20th century. Sigmund Freud addressed the issues in Thoughts for the Times on War and Death, written just six months after World War I began in 1915
and Jose Ortega y Gassett also discussed the issues in The Revolt of the Masses, published in 1930. Gassetts work was an extension of some ideas he had written in
the early 1920s but he develops them more fully in this later work (Gassett 2003). Freud discusses his own disillusionment of the human species as well as his disillusionment
with the state, an "institution of the civilized world" (Freud 2007). Freud always believed the worst about human nature, he promoted the idea that human nature was selfish, self-centered and
prone to violence if left on its own. Freud began his essay by acknowledging that the existence of a war leads to confusion within people. The public does not really
know whats going on because they must depend on the information provided to them and are thus, unable to interact or make their own decisions about the need for the
