his contributions have been thoroughly dissected by many classical psychologists such as Alfred Adler, Carl Jung, and Otto Rank, who began their own careers by following in Freuds footsteps before
forging separate psychological paths of their own (Mitchell and Black, 1995). Nevertheless, Freuds many contributions to psychology, most notably, his groundbreaking sub-science called psychoanalysis has assured his historical legacy,
and common references to "Freudian slips," or slips of the tongue that may reveal more than the speaker intended, serve as a constant reminder that the Austrian psychiatrist may be
gone, but has been hardly forgotten. Sigmund Freud was born in what is now Czechoslovakia on May 6, 1856, the son of a middle-aged, working-class Jewish merchant, Jakob, and his
much younger wife, Amalie (Hill, 1997). It has been the subject of speculation as to whether the fact that Freud had half-brothers who were approximately the same age as
his mother, as well as Freuds own fervent desire to excel to win his mothers favor, might have led to his fascination with human sexuality and its implications, but all
Freud would say of his childhood (which also included several younger siblings) was that there was "nothing about them worth remembering" (Hill, 1997, p. 72). The family relocated to
Vienna, which would be the center of Freuds academic, personal and professional universes for nearly all of his life. After receiving his medical degree, Freud wanted to concentrate on
