intensely to many of its readers; they may remember it for years or for the rest of their lives. This paper uses additional sources to illuminate the work and in
particular, Siddharthas search for meaning in life. Discussion Siddhartha is a beautiful novel, flowing apparently effortlessly like the river that Hesse mentions so frequently throughout the book. But it is
deceptive in its simplicity. By stripping away complex plots, action set pieces and political intrigue-all the things that most people would insist must be in a novel-Hesse brings Siddhartha himself
into sharp focus and allows readers to accompany him on his journey of self-discovery. This is in fact the main theme, and the question is universal: who am I and
why am I here? The entire book is Siddharthas search for his identity and purpose, and as such might seem uninteresting to people raised on dragons, car chases and explosions.
But the slow inner exploration is fascinating, provided a reader allows himself to sink into the world that Hesse creates and explores it at leisure. Perhaps the most intriguing
moment in the entire novel occurs early in the story, when Siddhartha, who has given up his position as a wealthy Brahmin to become a Samana-a holy man, living on
