that Marquez is making a statement about the connection between illness and love, how being lovesick is actually a condition, and a less than pleasant physical and emotional one. There
are people who claim that love itself is a sickness, and clearly this would indicate that lovesickness would also be a condition that was perhaps not as pleasant as people
would envision. The following paper examines the reality of love, and lovesickness, as a real sickness as it pertains to Marquez novel. Sickness in Love in the Time
of Cholera by Marquez One cannot help but notice, when reading Marquez work, that love is often symbolically linked to illness. One author notes that this is a concept that
Marquez may well have developed several decades before he wrote this novel: "In 1948, as a young journalist in Barranquilla, Gabriel Garcia Marquez amused his readers by comparing love to
a liver disease that could lead to the fatal complication of suicide" (Franco, 1988; 573). This is a perspective that truly seems to put love in a category most people
do not acknowledge, or even consider. Throughout his novel he illustrates various ways in which these people, the couple, deteriorate as they come closer to one another in their
old age. There is a symbolic reality to the novel that is always filled with a sense of illness and decay, which are all intricately linked to love. For example,
when they are finally together the narrator states how, "the vessel with the plague flag was carrying two people sick with cholera, and that the epidemic was wreaking havoc along
the portion f the river they still had to travel" (Marquez, 1988; 141). These two people were also sick with love, perhaps symbolic of the illness of cholera and other
