also a condition that can have very few symptoms, while a disease that, in the past, quickly killed infants and very young children. It is perhaps one of the most
widely researched conditions and it is one that has seen great changes to treatments that have prolonged the life of many sufferers. The following paper examines the disease, symptoms, causes,
and treatments. Sickle Cell Anemia "Sickle cell anemia is a hereditary disorder that mostly affects people of African ancestry, but also
occurs in other ethnic groups, including people who are of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent" (TeensHealth, 2007). People are born with the disease, they do not develop it (National Heart
Lung and Blood Institute, 2007). There is estimated to be around 70,000 people in the United States who have this disease (TeensHealth, 2007).
There is also estimated to be around 2 million people in the United States who have traits associated with the disease which means they do not have the disease
but can pass it on to their children (TeensHealth, 2007). The Mayo Clinic (2007) indicates that, "Approximately one in 12 black Americans has sickle cell trait." It takes two parents
with abnormal genes to pass it on to a child and the red blood cells themselves, "Instead of being flexible and round...are more rigid and curved in the shape of
