In the story of "King Lear" and "The Tempest" there are clear themes regarding sibling rivalry and how this illustrates elements of jealousy, hatred and death. The following paper examines the two stories separately concerning these thematic elements, and then compares the two. King Lear In the beginning of this play King Lear tells his daughters that they must proclaim how much they love him if he is to give them land. Goneril and Regan compete against one another in their words, while Cordelia simply indicates her words could never express her love, being that she is the honest and most true of the daughters. In Gonerils words we see the following: "Sir, I love you more than words can wield the matter;/ Dearer than eye-sight, space, and liberty;/ Beyond what can be valued, rich or rare;/ No less than life, with grace, health, beauty, honour;/ As much as child eer loved, or father found;/ A love that makes breath poor, and speech unable;/ Beyond all manner of so much I love you" (Shakespeare I i). Regan states that her sister Gonerils words come "too short" (Shakespeare I i). She tells him "I am alone felicitate/ In your dear highness love" (Shakespeare I i). In this we see the sibling rivalry that is clearly based on false emotion and love, as they lie and try to outdo one another for their fathers affection, or perhaps more accurately, their fathers power.
