survival, annihilation, mans inhumanity to man, and kindness as well. In fact, the characters in this work are remarkably polite and go about life matter of factly. One might think
they have stumbled on a Happy Days episode where the bomb did go off and the characters were fortunate enough to make their way into their neighbors bomb shelter. Much
has been written about nuclear war and what would happen afterwards. Many films have been made. One old clich? is if there were a World War Three, the next war
would be fought with bows and arrows. In other words, there would be just a handful of survivors and all the technology that had come to the world would
be gone. In Shutes novel, this happens in the 1950s before technology would change everything. In looking at the major thematic elements, one sees that these are concerns of many
authors and individuals. Many works center around survival in one form or another. Action novels of course come with them the possibility that a the protagonist will meet his or
her demise, and adventure novels too often will show men and women risking their lives in the wilderness. Jack Londons works are evidence of that. Mans inhumanity to man is
also another common theme, as is evil. Many believe that the world will always continue as it is because man is not that cruel. However, there is a darker side
that sees war as inevitable and it is mans inhumanity to man that permits such evil to invade daily life. Annihilation goes along with that theme, but has a new
