Jehovah's Witnesses (JWs) follow the dictums of their sect's authorities who dictate that when someone disagrees with their tenets of their faith, it is the obligation of members, even when it involves their own families, to shun them. While this practice is rationalized according to scripture, specifically 1 Corinthians 5:6-7, the extreme measures that JWs are compelled to follow goes against the dictum of love that is the principle theme of both the New Testament and the words of Jesus Christ. historic fact that the Watchtower and JWs have not always been as strict in their policies concerning shunning as they are now. The April 1, 1920 edition of the Watchtower,
pages 100-101, states that believers should not "refuse to treat one as a brother because he did not believe the Society is the Lords channel. If others see it in
a different way, that is their privilege" (Watter, 2001). Similarly, a 1974 article in Watchtower (Aug. 1, p. 467) states that members of ones own family and those in obvious
hardship should not be treated cruelly, as "we dont want to be like Pharisees who walked on the other side of the road when a Gentile was in trouble" (Watter,
2001). Since this was published JW policy has become progressively stern and unrelenting concerning not just those who they feel are sinners, but anyone who dares to oppose any dictum
of their faith. During the 1970s, the Watchtower shows that JWs leadership took a more conciliatory stance towards shunning family members. However, this changed suddenly in the 1980s. Did the
