approximately eight hours per day for five days. Of course, the reality is that some people work many more hours than that, sometimes holding down two or three jobs just
to make ends meet. People in certain occupations such as law or medicine sometimes will find themselves struggling to put in enough hours. However, unlike nations like the United States,
where such situations exist, the European Union sets limits on how much time a worker can put in. There are similar laws in the United States, particularly as they pertain
to children, but they are not quite as stringent as they appear in the European Union. In order to understand why there are limits on working in the EU,
it pays to explore history. Since 1993, the dictum to work only 48 hours per week was adopted by the European Union ("Work to," 1996). That seems like a reasonable
amount of time to put into work and translates to a nine hour, instead of an eight hour, day. Yet, many people do find working long hours difficult and a
48 hour week, to some, can be draining. Further, by allowing a 48 hour week, firms are obligated to give their laborers more hours, so that they can make more
money, rather than spreading the wealth by hiring more people. The other side of that is that employers may eek out more work without really compensating fairly for the extra
time. In other words, someone who commands a particular annual salary for a 40 hour week will earn something similar for 48 hours. In fact, hiring more people could be
