MARRIAGE While some religions may be more tolerant with regard to same-sex marriages, the Catholic Church is not ashamed to state its opposing position on the subject. Perhaps no
other entity is so precise when it comes to the treatment of homosexuals: "It is deplorable that homosexual persons have been and are the object of violent malice in speech
or in action. Such treatment deserves condemnation from the Churchs pastors wherever it occurs. It reveals a kind of disregard for others that endangers the most fundamental principles
of a healthy society. The intrinsic dignity of each person must always be respected in word, in action and in law" (Sullivan, 1997, PG).
Yet the Churchs attitude is well founded. Sex between two people is meant for procreation; it is no secret that homosexuals cannot conceive children.
Therefore, it is merely physical gratification that dictates a same-sex marriage. Those who have any understanding at all of the Catholic Church realize that their position is one built
on the sanctity of traditional matrimony, traditional values, where a man and a woman join lives to create a family. Sex may be a component of that relationship, but
it is not the leading factor like it is with homosexuals. Children require a stable, traditional home life if they are expected to grow into normally functioning adults. This
cannot be obtained from a home where both parents are of the same sex. Each parent represents a much-needed entity in the growth of a child: the mother provides
