codes and policies as a carrier of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). In the past it has often been assumed that this could be costly to a company, as Freidman,
who was a proponent of looking after shareholder needs as the only primary stakeholder, would argue that the business would be failing in its duty if it were to divert
money from profit making activities to develop and implement CSR policies, with the only exception being when the market was demanding it and would reflect in the company profits. However,
this may also be argued as a short sighted view, it is also possible to argue that the market is starting to demand that businesses act in this way and
as such we may argue that it is both good for the profits and driven by profits where this is implemented as well as able to be driven by ethics
and social concerns. If we are going to examine this we first need to consider what is meant by corporate social responsibility.
There is not single definition that is widely accepted. One good definition is that of Holmes and Watts (2000); "Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by business to behave
ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large".
Within this there may be the extension of the concept to the approaches such as environmentalism to the way in which corporate governance may be taking place, these may be
