a common educational foundation or not. There are important points to both sides of this argument which should be analyzed and understood before arriving at an opinion on the
subject. On the one hand, a common background for all students would ensure consistency and would offer all college students the same educational foundation. This would be useful in
several ways. First, it would help students by providing a basic education in terms of being well-rounded and covering pertinent topics. Second, in terms of employers, they would
know what to expect in terms of the education which the student has received. Third, it would give universities common ground and attracting students would have to be accomplished
on other grounds. Fourth, students would be able to receive a comparable education regardless of their ability to pay for, or be accepted to, an affluent institution or just
a common, hometown university. Fifth, students would be able to easily transfer between institutions as well as apply for higher degrees knowing that the basics have already been covered
and will not conflict with the new schools minimum requirements. There are other examples as well of the positive changes which would result from such an action, but,
the flip side needs to be considered too. What, then, are the disadvantages to providing all university students with a common educational foundation? First, universities, whether state or
private institutions currently have the ability to, for the most part, operate themselves and make these types of decisions in terms of what basic requirements will specifically be needed in
