men rushed around trying to extinguish the fires on and around Westminster Abbey (Chandler, 1997). They were trying to save what was perceived as the symbol of the nations very
soul (Chandler, 1997). Houses around the Abbey were ablaze, the central tower caught fire, there wasnt enough water to put out all the growing fires (Chandler, 1997). At 3:00 AM,
F.R. Barry, one of the canons placed a desperate and frantic call to 10 Downing Street (Chandler, 1997). Barry knew the only way Westminster Abbey would be saved was by
a direct order from the Prime Minister (Chandler, 1997). And, thats exactly what happened; a fire brigade was dispatched immediately (Chandler, 1997). When dawn arrived, everyone could see the Abbey
had been saved (Chandler, 1997). This symbol, so important to an entire nation and for much of the world, for that matter, had been saved through and order of the
Prime Minister. The actions taken reflect "how a set of values, religious, historic, political and patriotic -- hard to define, perhaps, and certainly difficult to separate -- might converge dramatically
at a time of crisis" (Chandler, 1997). There was no hesitation, no concerns about the separation of church and state. Westminster Abbey was and is a symbol of the culture
of England. If something that catastrophic were to happen today, would the Prime Minister respond to save the church? One can only hope so. Would the Prime Minister be faced
with criticism and accused of involving the state with the church? Probably, even given the fact that Westminster Abbey is not just a church, it holds the history of England.
