Gaining tenure is extremely difficult and generally involves a six-year probation period, which constitutes a period job insecurity that is "unique" in American business culture (Ovington, et al 635). After six years of hard work, good approval ratings and meeting other criteria, a non-tenured assistant professor can be dismissed in "what is called the up-or-out process" (Ovington, et al 635). However, this system is not arbitrary and denial of tenure should be based on "meticulous documentation that spans the six-year-probationary process" (Ovington, et al 635). However, the literature on the tenure debate indicates that this ideal is very often not the case, particularly in regards to the relationship between scientific research conduced by junior faculty and whether or not they receive tenure. In a poll taken by a scientific journal of how their readers regarded this issue, the overwhelming response was that "tenure needs to go" ("Does tenure" 30). As one respondent put it, "In order to get tenured and promoted, I had to divert time, energy and other resources away from improving my teaching, mentoring students, doing applied research with my students" in order to meet the expectation that he should bring "in money to support undergraduate research," which seems to be an expected requirement for tenure at some institutions ("Does tenure" 30). Investigation of literature on this thesis question indicates that that there are voices that promote the structure of tenure as it presently exists and also those who say that it needs to be abolished and the way in which faculty members are evaluated needs to be restructured.
