should race be a consideration in college admissions? Though DSouza offers a resounding "no," he not only maintains the controversial nature of this assertion, but also offers up a
number of examples of people who have argued the opposite. DSouza may support an unpopular view of Affirmative Action, he has identified a central problem in the modern culture
and offered a solution by suggesting a new way of looking at racial policy. DSouzas perspective, in opposition to preferential racial consideration in admissions, is valuable in supporting
both the academic focus and standards in high learning. Support for Affirmative Action policies in admissions in institutions of higher learning had widespread acceptability in the 1980s and 1990s (Lewin).
Most colleges and universities applied a biased standard based on racial considerations in order to attract and maintain a racially diverse learner population. Supporters of this process, including
former Harvard University president Derek Bok and former Princeton president William Bowen, have maintained that preferential treatment in admission is necessary to maintain a minority population in top ranked colleges
and universities. Without these standards, the two contended, academically selective colleges would have very few minority students. Though DSouza does not debate that this might be a reality
and that the end of racial preferencing would change the composition of colleges and universities nationwide, he does assert that viewing this as a necessity (racial equity) is a significant
