resources that it provides. The modern world has seen man become the dominant life form on the planet, which leads to a puzzle; what is the correct relationship between man
and his environment? Is it right for man to exploit the environment, or does man have a responsibility to protect and loo after the environment. Question 1 -
Man should exploit the earth There are a number of arguments that support the idea that man should be exploiting the environment. This does not mean that human should
be undertaking wholesale plunder and stripping the earth of all its resources; this would not been in the interest of the human race. For the human race to survive there
need to be sufficient resources for future generations, so it may be assumed when talking of exploiting the environment this does not mean a simple short term approach. As major
strength of this approach is it appear to be that adopted by the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) with the report prepared by the Brundtland Commission which looked
at the concept of sustainable development and dated that it should be undertaken in a manner that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs" (WECD, 1987). This approach clearly indicates that the primary concern of development should be needs of mankind with consideration for the future. This may be
seen as a light green approach, where the environment is not totally ignored, but it is subordinate to mans needs. When looking at the way that the environment has
