Americans feel that no one should be allowed to immigrate to the nation. One of the issues related to immigration is that which involves the English language. The following paper
examines whether or not immigrants coming to the United States should be expected to learn the English language. Should Immigrants Speak English? It should perhaps be first understood
that while Americans are generally English speaking people, there is no official language of the United States and as such there is no law related to what language should be
spoken, or written, in the United States. But, it is generally assumed that if one is a citizen of the nation they speak English and it is the primary language
spoken. In fact, English is one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world and many people in other nations speak English. One author indicates how, "Not
everybody learns English immediately when they come to this country. Some of us had ancestors who could barely speak English their whole lives" (Garver). Many of those individuals lived in
neighborhoods of their ethnicity and thus they spoke their homeland language a great deal of the time. This is also the case today and many are fearful that such new
immigrants are "unwilling to assimilate" (Garver). It seems that if they are protected, in the sense that they have family and communities who speak their language, then they are unwilling
