their own, however. Parents must be involved in teaching their teenage children to develop these habits and, in fact, must insist on these things. In fact, the rules for holding
a part-time job should be established by parents prior to allowing their teenager to get a job. Two examples of the discussion and rules prior to the teen working are:
at least 20 percent of the money must be put in a savings account and if school grades suffer, the teen must quit the job. The discussion between parents
and teen must cover numerous topics about work. For instance, teens need to be told that not all work is exciting and fun, some of it is monotonous. The boss
is always the boss and employees must follow the rules at work. Further, the number of work hours per day and per week should be established. Parents need to determine
these hours in collaboration with their teen but parents need to know that if a teen works more than two or three hours after school, they will not have time
to do their homework and will get too tired. Also, teens need a day off each week which would preclude them working both Saturday and Sunday. Studies have shown
the benefits and drawbacks of teenagers working (Cress 283; Etzioni 279; McClellan). In some cases, working can lead to very negative results and do not teach the youngster the values,
attitudes and behaviors mentioned earlier. For instance, a study in Orange County, California, found that teens became thieves when they worked: 30 percent gave away goods or services to friends,
