never free of cost. Taxpayers vote on the school budget each and every year, and they really do foot the bill through this form of taxation. Still, schools are open to those who rent and those who own property in the community as the United States is committed to providing a free education to all. This includes people who are on public assistance, which negates the idea that the people are paying anyway. In reality, while tax dollars do pay for public education, it is something that is meted out not according to what one puts into it, but what a child can get out of it. In Nigeria, the idea of the free and equal education is not taken for granted. In fact, today, all African states strive to create a system of free education for their children. The question is whether or not this should be the case. Should education be free at all levels in Nigeria? At first glance, one could say that yes, free education should be a birthright. Certainly from the early years through elementary school, Nigerian children should be afforded a free education. Of course, the other side of that is money. With impoverished areas, would the funding go further if it were entrenched in a project to feed, clothe and shelter the people? Money can only be stretched so far and when it comes to the human hierarchy of needs, certainly life sustaining products take precedence. The argument is perhaps not all that dismal. It is not as if some of the people would have to give up their lives for education. Still, money is an issue and many people feel that it is a good thing for children to be educated.
