is "a precious time [that] costs human lives" (Bailey, 2006). Mello went on to day that the consequence is "sentencing people to death when we could be helping" (Bailey, 2006).
Bailey (206) reported that research dollars are becoming scarcer and scientists are blaming politicians who are "too dim to understand the vital importance of scientific research." Most of the money
for medical research is coming from industry, 57 percent of the funding for biomedical research in 2005 was from industry (Bailey, 2006). Only 28 percent came from the National Institutes
of Health (Bailey, 2006). Only 5.8 percent of all expenditures in the health care industry was dedicated to research (Bailey, 2006). Another author pointed out that medical research over the
last 100 years "advanced human health more than all the previous 5,000 years combined" (Public Agenda, 2006). Consider that life expectancy for people born in 1900 was an average 49
years but it was 77 years for people born in 2005 (Public Agenda, 2006). If we are going to conquer the diseases that claim the most lives today, we will
have to put a great deal more money into medical research. Pharmaceutical companies and universities are two of the primary research environments. The government did fund the human genome research
and they need to continue to fund the studies that need to be done today. The benefits are vast. As we can conclude from past research. Funding further will lead
to the elimination of diseases like cancer, Alzheimers, diabetes, central nervous system diseases, AIDS and many others. Popular science articles and mass media inform us that new diseases will be
born. If more medical research is not funded, we can expect more and more lives to be claimed by the mentioned diseases that need not have been claimed.
