by doing so can potentially save other lives. But some are not quite as generous. They are willing to give blood but want to be paid for their efforts. Is it ethical? Is it safe? The questions which plague the medical profession is whether or not selling bodily parts or fluids are acceptable. There is, after all, a ban on the selling of body parts but as far as blood is concerned, there is not as much of a backlash against paying blood donors. Blood was the first commodity of its nature to enter the market, and it is currently the most commonly sold bodily product (Wright 114). But it was not always sold as a product. Its economic trail takes one back to when blood groups were discovered earlier in the century; by the time the 1950s rolled around, blood transfusions were a commonplace in the United States (114). Blood banks sprang up and two competing models soon evolved which were commercial suppliers and nonprofit collection centers (114). The two types of blood banks each ended up with a part of the market (114). In present times, most transfusions are completed with donated blood (114). However, commercial centers, which make use of paid donors, provide almost all of the blood utilized by the pharmaceutical industry in developing vaccines, diagnostics, and drug products (114). That of course makes sense as when people donate blood, they want it to go to people in need, and might not like it if their fluids ended up as part of experimentation. In a way, things seem to work out, but the problem of paying blood donors is not completely benign. The problem is not merely one of ethics but of safety as well.
